Grades K-1 Little ones eager for a furry friend will get basic advice about an ideal starter pet in this installment in the Favorite Pets series (6 titles). Simple, straightforward sentences with limited vocabulary are easy to read on the crisp, white pages, which feature lots of adorable photos of furry, buck-toothed guinea pigs. The tips are basic?what guinea pigs eat, where they should live, and what they need to thrive, like chew toys and places to hide?but pretty comprehensive, especially considering the short word count. The photos are often labeled, occasionally with vocabulary words and elsewhere to identify types of guinea pigs and their features, and a closing glossary and further resources (directing readers to a publisher-owned website with downloadable materials) help bolster learning.
