      Gr 4-6-A clearly written, very detailed series. Some sophisticated, technical terms that will be unfamiliar to some students are presented; not all are included in the glossaries or provided with pronunciation guides. Multiple visuals and features-clearly labeled/captioned images, up-close charts and diagrams of each system's components, sidebars, and factoid boxes with fascinating statistics and trivia-enhance comprehension. A pictorial, captioned time line in each volume features highlights in the historical development of knowledge of the system over centuries. This is an "AV2 media-enhanced" series: Using a code on page two of each title, students can access supplementary content and learning opportunities online, including audio, video, activities, experiments, and quizzes. Each title concludes with career information, a quiz, and a hands-on activity that clarifies how the system works. VERDICT Very well done; best suited to mature, serious students rather than striving readers. Excellent for reports. Recommended for public and school libraries.
