Grades 7-12 For students who need reliable and concise research sources on controversial topics, these volumes in the Special Reports series offer great options. Accompanied by color photos, graphs, and charts, each book starts its discussion with a recent news story that draws attention to the issue and continues with an overview of the controversy at hand. Subsequent chapters give a historical background and address multiple points of view. Fracking explains the hydraulic fracturing process (more commonly known as fracking) to release natural gas and other fossil fuels from underground and the myriad debates it has initiated, such as water contamination and a rise in earthquakes. The titles conclude by considering the future of each topic. Sidebars, numerous media stories, and extensive back matter extend the value of the series.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)

This volume covers fracking, the cracking of underground rock formations to release trapped oil and gas. Hulick discusses the history of the process, the technical procedures involved, and the controversy related to water contamination and other environmental effects. Photographs add interest, and many sidebars (with tiny type) extend the text; the "From the Headlines" coverage will be quickly dated. Reading list. Bib., glos., ind.
